The Montessori Method

At Bella Escuela , we follow a pure Montessori curriculum based on the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori which sets us apart from traditional pre-schools.

Mixed Age Classes

Children learn best in a mixed age group classroom while developing uniquely human social experiences – the younger ones aspire to take on more challenging work and learn from observing the older children at work. The older ones become responsible for caring for the younger ones.

Prepared Environment

We provide a carefully readied and organised setting with logical groupings of material representing a specialized topical area such as language, arts, mathematics or other such curricular subjects. The room is furnished with shelves to contain and organise the material, child sized furniture, and a variety of interesting workspaces for children.

Specialized Montessori Materials

Unlike learning materials used in regular Kindergartens, the Montessori materials are scientifically designed, made of hard wood or metal and serving a particular purpose.

Movement

Children in a Montessori environment are not restricted to a chair and table. Instead, the work gives them the opportunity to move around purposefully in the classroom.

Freedom of Choice and Repetition

In a Montessori environment, freedom brings with it responsibility. Children have the freedom to make choices regarding their work choices, work partners and repeat activities to their level of satisfaction. As a result, children bear the responsibility for the consequences of the choices.

Independence

Beginning with the youngest children, the exercises of practical life are designed to encourage children to perform tasks with minimum assistance from the adult.

Respect

Children in our Montessori environment are treated with respect. We believe that they have the innate intelligence to learn through exploration and self- correction, rather than the adult taking the upper hand to always lead the way.

The Trained Adult

The adults in our environment act as guides to the children, presenting age- appropriate material and demonstrating the appropriate use of the same. They then step back to allow the child to explore, make discoveries and self correct. Unlike a traditional school environment, the approach followed here is child led rather than teacher led. The adult is trained to follow the lead of each child in terms of their individual interest, inclination, pace and style of learning.

WHO WAS MARIA MONTESSORI?

The Montessori Method of education derives its name from Dr. Maria Montessori, a woman, who in many ways, was ahead of her time.

Being the first female physician in Italy, the clinical observations she made during her medical practice is what led her to analyzing how children effortlessly learn and build themselves by  absorbing what they see in their immediate surroundings and their tireless interest in manipulating materials.

The simple but profound truth that ‘Children teach themselves’ is what inspired Dr. Montessori’s  lifelong pursuit of educational reform.  Every piece of equipment, every exercise, every lesson she developed was based on her observation of children to do "naturally" by themselves and unassisted by adults.

In 1906, she accepted the challenge to educate 60 children of working parents in the San Lorenzo district of Rome. It was there that she founded the first Casa dei Bambini, or "Children's House," and developed what ultimately became the Montessori way of education. Today, her work continues with the presence of Montessori schools on every continent except Antarctica.
